I’ve decided to start a series of posts called “Thoughts Of The Day.” Being from Germany and living in a foreign country that I now call home, I experience things on a day-to-day basis that are either weird, extraordinary or just flat out different.
Something I’ve learned in the past few weeks is to be forward. Whether it’s about your feelings, what you want or just something you need, being forward is the only way to achieve it. If you want something, do something about it. Nothing is going to come from no hard work. It’s really become apparent to me through my chosen profession. If a source doesn’t email you back, email again. If an internship doesn’t get back to you, follow up. If you really really want something, you have to fight for it — there’s no way around it.
Yeah, you might be shy, or scared, or whatever. Get over it immediately. Getting over your shyness will not only help you in your given situation, but it’ll help you in the future. And before you know it, you got what you wanted and maybe something better will come of it. Actually, people love when you follow up because it shows you are committed and persistent.
That being said, don’t be rude and annoying. There’s no point in saying, “I never heard back from you,” because no one ever owes you anything. Nancy Miller of L.A. Magazine (see the interview below) once told me that she barely responds to people that start an email like that because an editor is not required to answer you. If you start in a different, more polite way, however, you might just find what you were looking for.
I know this “Thought of The Day” has helped me get through the week. Really though, try it.
